In a post-war context of relaxed censorship\, and amidst the Italian economic boom\, Eureka was at the forefront of a new comics craze. The second is CRY BABY! The second retro-themed John Waters film classic turned musical (hot on the heels of Hairspray!) focuses on Baltimore teenager Allison Vernon-Williams\, who is drawn across the tracks from her 1954 finishing-school background into a relationship with the orphaned Wade “Cry-Baby” Walker\, the leader of a pack of rebel outcasts. The Wall Street Journal wrote of its 2007 California premiere\, ‘campy\, fabulously well-crafted and madly\, outrageously funny.’ while Newsday agreed\, ‘deep in the sweet darkness of its loopy heart it’s more true to the cheerful subversion of a John Waters movie than its sentimental big sister Hairspray. With Roackabilly-inspired numbers expect more of the Triple Threat Company’s legendary music\, dance and design production values under a stellar professional creative team and live band. You will be watching the next generation of exceptional West End professionals too\, with previous cast members currently in Les Miserables and Sunset Boulevard and two former cast members who featured in the West End’s 2021 production of Hairspray itself.   \n   \nAn amateur production presented by arrangement with Musical Theatre International  \n  \nDates   \nThursday 2nd May- Saturday 4th May 2024  \nPerformances 7.30pm with a 2.30pm matinee on Saturday   \n  \nTickets From £10 conc to £16.00 full price https://wtm.uk/events  URL:/event/cry-baby-the-musical-2/ LOCATION:Worthing Pavilion Theatre\, Worthing CATEGORIES:Musical Theatre ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/png:/app/uploads/2024/02/2-3-4-May-24.png END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=Europe/London:20240504T193000 DTEND;TZID=Europe/London:20240504T193000 DTSTAMP:20240504T083730 CREATED:20240318T084832Z LAST-MODIFIED:20240318T084832Z UID:10000420-1714851000-1714851000@www.chi.ac.uk SUMMARY:Cry Baby - The Musical DESCRIPTION:The celebrated ˿Ƶ TRIPLE THREAT COMPANY are back in Worthing with two of their hottest shows ever! It will explore new post-colonial paradigms across media\, including also the role of commercial markets and fandom. \nPresenters will respond to two key questions (i) what are the global comics industries? (ii) how do changing business patterns and practices co-produce new authorship\, distribution\, technical processes of making and the aesthetic production and reception of comics? \nPanel and paper topics will include the importance of the economic context for comics making (across old and new media); the connectivity between post-colonialism and post-print comics making; historical precedents as backdrop or model for current practice; comics fandom as site of cultural co-production; and the shifts in publishing sites between ‘Global North’ and ‘Global South’. \nConference convenors: \n\nProfessor Hugo Frey\, ˿Ƶ\nProfessor Simon Grennan\, University of Chester\n\nSpeakers across the two-day conference include: \n\nDr Carly Bagelman\, Liverpool Hope University\nProfessor Jacqueline Berndt\, Stockholm University\nProfessor Monica Chiu\, University of New Hampshire\nProfessor Simon Grennan\, University of Chester\nDr Kathryn Hemmann\, University of Pennsylvania\nDr Nicolle Lamerichs\, HU University Utrecht\nDr Ilan Manouach\, Metalab Harvard; Echo Chamber\, Brussels\nDr Nina Mickwitz\, University of the Arts London\nDr Pedro Moura\, independent scholar\nDr Dibyadyuti Roy\, University of Liverpool\nDr Enrique Uribe-Jongbloed\, University of Cardiff; Universidad Externado de Colombia\nAssociate Professor Lukas R A Wilde\, Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim\n\nA conference programme and ticket link will be added soon.
