Exhibition Launch Eureka! | Anglo-Italian 1960s Comics

Luis Alvas. 'Posters and stickers on 6th Street, Pueblo, Mexico (saying “I won’t shut up, James.’)'

We are delighted to welcome all staff and students to the launch of Eureka! The exhibition is the first of its kind to bring back a forgotten but important history of Anglo-Italian relations.

Founded in 1967 by Luciano Secchi, Eureka was one of the most significant popular Italian comics of the Sixties and Seventies. In a post-war context of relaxed censorship, and amidst the Italian economic boom, Eureka was at the forefront of a new comics craze. What really set Eureka apart from other publications was it didn’t look exclusively to America, or France – instead, it channelled the London Swinging Sixties vibe. With vibrant, almost psychedelic covers, Eureka introduced Italian readers to memorable British strips from ‘Andy Capp’ to ‘Tiffany Jones’, later adding homegrown productions such as Bonvi’s ‘Sturmtruppen’ and ‘Lupo Alberto’.

Free admission. To attend the opening launch, please contact Alessandro Pozzolo at apozzol1@stu.chi.ac.uk. The exhibition will run from the 22nd April to the 2nd of July at the LRC.

The show has been curated by Hugo Frey and Alessandro Pozzolo in partnership with the Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ and the Italian Cultural Institute in London.
